No More Wilson High School?

LAUSD recently announced that Wilson High School will be made available to outside operators under the terms and conditions of the Public School Choice (PSC) program. PSC involves a process whereby any group can submit a proposal to take control and operate underperforming schools. Some of the criteria that LAUSD uses to rate a schools performance are Annual Performance Index (API), standardized test scores and dropout rates.

In simple terms, due to low ratings, Wilson High School is up for grabs and may, in the very near future, become one or several different Charter Schools. While Charter Schools have experienced some success, a common criticism is that they tend to filter out challenging students and/or cherry-pick the best of the best.

However, there is another, perhaps more desirable outcome. Instead of becoming a Charter, the District may elect to adopt Wilson’s OWN proposal for improvement. With that goal in mind, a diverse design team made up of concerned Wilson teachers, administrators, students, parents, alumni and community members have begun writing a strong proposal that will focus on meeting the educational needs of ALL Wilson students, not just those that are highly motivated and easy to teach.

You are invited to this important forum to learn more about the issue of school choice, hear from Wilson’s proposal design team and offer plan suggestions of your own. Ultimately, if the educational interests of ALL of Wilson students are to prevail, it will require the full support and involvement of the entire Wilson community. On April 9, the Wilson design team hopes to earn your support.

Letters of Intent are due on March 31st, after which we will know who is interested in proposing to take over Wilson. The actual proposals are due on October 14th, 2011 and the final decisions will be made sometime in January 2012.
