Our Town El Sereno is taking the time to recognize a student athlete from Wilson High School who excels in not just one sport but three. His name is Andrew Urbina, a junior who is currently the starting pitcher on the Varsity Baseball team. In late March he led his team to victory in the Northern League opener against Eagle Rock. Andrew was also a starter on the Varsity Basketball and Football teams. Urbina stands out compared to your typical high school athlete as we live in an era where it is common for so many athletes to focus only on one sport. There are several athletes at Wilson High who play multi-sports but Andrew is the only athlete who plays three sports at the Varsity level, not an easy thing to do. The impressive thing is how well he plays in all of his endeavors.
Andrew stated, "I like playing all three of them for similar but different reasons, I just like to keep busy and make my parents and family proud of me. I just want to win a Championship in any of the three sports so I can achieve the ultimate goal of being a Champion like my uncle Danny did when he played football on the 1996 team.”
Andrew also excels in school currently posting a 3.2 grade point average. Congratulations Andrew on your success in the playing field but most importantly for also succeeding in the classroom.
Opening Day Set at El Sereno Park: Play Ball!
It’s April again, another exciting season of youth baseball and softball has reached the El Sereno Recreation Center. Thanks to everyone, last year we had approximately 38 teams with 400 and more boys and girls ages 5 to 15 played the nations favorite pastime. We hope to continue the tradition here at El Sereno Recreation Center and play an unforgettable Spring 2011 Co-Ed Baseball/Softball Season.
The "Opening Day" is scheduled for April 23, 2011. The ceremony will start at 10:00 am with opening remarks by Recreation Coordinator Cheryl Flores, followed by the national anthem and the ceremonial first pitch. Please come out and join in on the festivity as all of our teams and players will be announced. In addition, with help from NC-32 (your local neighborhood council) all the players will receive a free lunch.
We thank you for your support of the program, and we hope to continue to service this community with fun and quality activities such as our Winter Baseball.
